Chiarpei’s design process is first that of an artist, employing freehand sketching to find the fluid, visual poetry of an object in space. More essential than minimalist, his predilection is for sinuous lines flowing with tensile strength. Each piece exhibits focused attention to detail in all aspects, beginning with its finest artisanal construction. The Sleigh’s inspiration is found in the ancient world, particularly the mysteries of the north with its immaculate forests and vast expanses of snow. A sleigh, nee slee, sled or sledge, a carriage that glides over a surface with little friction. The Sleigh is a contemporary incarnation; a sculptural collaboration of bent wood (Tanganika) with a suspended canvas or leather mattress, transporting its passengers on another kind of a journey: one borne of deep, immersive relaxation.
